About Colin

Colin Smith grew up in Michigan, raised by a single mother who put herself through graduate school. They lived on student loans and the occasional child support check until his mother finished school and found a living wage. From watching his mom struggle—working herself to the bone and feeling like she never had enough time with her small son—Colin developed passionate feelings about affordability. Regardless of career path, folks should be able to afford housing, food, health care, and education, even in a highly desirable urban space like Salt Lake City.
After graduating from high school, Colin attended the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) in Lander, WY. His time in the backcountry inspired him to move to Utah in 2007 to pursue his outdoor interests: skiing, rock climbing, paddleboarding, biking, hiking, and camping. As an outdoorsman, Colin cares deeply about Utah’s environment. Restoring the Great Salt Lake to a healthy level is his number one priority. Colin has spent nearly two decades in the Wasatch Front, and he knows that the health of the lake is inextricably tied to human health in Utah.
Colin began his career in the mental health field in 2009. He’s worked in reputable, evidence-based addiction treatment programs around the state. In his current role, he leads the outdoor program at an adult in-patient program, helping young men connect with the outdoors and find a healthier way of life. He is also the co-owner and co-founder of a personal coaching company. As a small business owner, Colin understands the challenges that Utah’s small businesses face.
For Utah’s economy to grow and prosper, we must improve affordability, so our state continues to attract workers. We must build up our infrastructure to make Salt Lake City attractive and functional when we go on display for the world in 2034.
